Starring: Steve Martin, Rachel Ward,
Director: Carl Reiner
Steve Martin stars as a private detective in this neo noir, film noir homage, comedy that’s a love letter to the classic movies of the 40’s. Shot in black and white, the movie makes fun of the plot lines and tropes of the hard boiled detective films of a bygone era by seamlessly integrating shots from those films into a funny new narrative. It’s clever, weird and witty!

I saw this film when it first came out. I was 16 or 17 and thought it was weird – too much of a departure from the Wild and Crazy Guy. I’ve never gotten around to revisiting it.

Great comment, do you think you might rewatch it? You’re right, it is a different character than his usual roles.

It had fallen off my radar until I saw your post. I may get around to it at some point, but there’s plenty of actual film noir I haven’t seen as well.

A classic, wherein Steve Martin was hilarious & Rachel Ward beautiful! Love the the black & white, and the scene where Steve Martin is making java from a bottomless bag of Eight O’Clock Coffee 😂
