Hallowe’en Flicks: Annabelle Comes Home (2019)

Starring: Madison Iseman, Mckenna Grace, Katie Sarife, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson

Director: Gary Dauberman

Ed and Lorraine Warren bring Annabelle home and lock her in a cabinet which is sealed by a priest. She’s all locked up, what could go wrong? When they go away overnight, their daughter Judy (Grace) is left in the care of babysitter Mary Ellen (Iseman), whose curious friend Daniela (Rios) comes over and lets loose Annabelle and all hell breaks loose…..

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this film, since some films in this franchise work and others are total duds. But I really enjoyed this one. Set in the 70’s, it has a fun retro vibe that I really enjoyed (since seeing this I’ve bought a cord skirt and plaid flares), from the clothes and hair to the groovy wallpaper. Though Ed and Lorraine make an appearance, this is really their daughter Judy’s film, and it’s nice to get a window into what it must have been like growing up with parents who were demonologists and had a creepy museum in their basement. All the performances feel really solid, which often is not the case with a young cast, and there’s a kind of playful lightness at times to the film which really balances out the high tension moments which dominate the film. It’s genuinely scary fun, with all kinds of madness and terror leaking out of that room downstairs…

Scale of Scary: 7/10 Nothing good ever happens when you’re a teen babysitter in a movie…. A good addition to the Ed and Lorraine Warren/Conjuring stable.
