Starring: Casey Affleck, Rooney Mara
Director: David Lowery
C (Affleck) and M (Mara) are a young couple. When C dies unexpectedly he returns to the house as a ghost in a white sheet and watches his wife grieve and move on, while he remains and tries to figure out the afterlife.
It’s an odd premise for a film, a ghost being a man in a white sheet. But everything about this film is a little unconventional. It’s largely a quiet film, there’s not a lot of dialogue, as the ghost can’t talk, and there’s moments like a long, long scene where M eats an entire pie out of grief and then throws up. It’s a film where the ghost at first watches over his partner’s grief, but then he is left behind in this house. He haunts it as it’s occupants change, and at one point he even goes back in time through his attachment to the place.
For a film about grief and love, loss and change, and I love the quiet way this film explores those things, with it’s small moments of surprise and humour, as well as it’s gentle focus on long takes and small things. It’s a film that’s more beautiful than it is sad, though it has it’s sadness too. I think it’s a film that you’ll either love and feel moved by, or find to be too different and elusive, but I liked that it breaks the mould a little, and stands out from other dramas and stories of the afterlife.
It also does a lot with an emotional performance by an actor wearing a sheet.
See It If: you’ve ever wondered about ghosts or lost someone. This is a film that explores emotional themes in novel way, and is quite beautiful to watch.
I have yet to see this movie though it does sound intrguing. I love the strange and unusual indie aspects to certain movies which can execute with charm. I hope you had a nice time in Italy. It must be beautiful there. (P.s I had to refollow you duemto some issues with my browser but it should be fine now. I am also very sick hence why I sometimes miss some posts but I’m sure you didn’t notice heh).

I’m glad to hear you had a wonderful holiday. And thank you for your kind hearted words Hermione. X I’ve been diagnosed with a form of cancer but I never mentioned it for awhile as not to make things uncomfortable but the shock of it all meant I had to leave wordpress for a month or so. It’s going to be a difficult journey ahead no doubt, but I will try to keep writing when I can manage though my time spent here may be sparse.

It sounds like a bit of a strange movie, but as I am a pretty big Casey Affleck fan, I’m still going to check this one out. As always, awesome review!
Off topic: is everything okay? Haven’t heard from you in a while, hope all is going well 😊
