105 Must See Films: Body Heat (1981)

Starring: William Hurt, Kathleen Turner, Richard Crenna

Director: Lawrence Kasdan

A wonderful piece of 80’s neo-noir, set in Florida, sees Ned (Hurt) a sleazy lawyer meet a beautiful married woman, Matty (Turner). What starts as a hot affair turns to a plot to murder her wealthy husband, as the two fall deeper in love and become desperate to be together. But in all the plotting, who is really double crossing who?

It’s a film noir, suspense crime movie set in a heat wave in Florida, touching all the tropes of the genre, but updating them for a more savvy audience.

It’s A Must See Because: from the writer of Raiders If The Lost Arc, this one really blew people out of the water with it’s full on sex scenes, which were quite risque at the time. It was quite controversial, but when the talk settled down, it slowly became accepted as a classic, and a great example of film noir, with it’s femme fatale enticing an immoral man to his fate. Not bad for a directorial debut.

See It If: you’re a film noir fan, or you love a good mystery thriller. It’s sexy, intriguing and inventive.

  1. One of the best of the genre. Just watched China Moon and all I kept thinking was this is great but how perfect is Body Heat. Sexy as hell too. See enough to get the imagination going without turning into porn.
